Overview
Originally launched in 2012 with the reference 79220R, the Tudor Black Bay took the watch world by storm and catapulted the brand to a top player in the affordable luxury sports watch category. The collection has grown over the years to include a number of watches with vintage-inspired designs that harken back to Tudor’s Submariners from the 1950s and 60s. The most emblematic feature of these watches is, of course, the use of a “snowflake” hour hand pulled directly from the vintage reference 7016. With a plethora of different case sizes, styles, complications, and case materials, there’s a little something for everyone in the Black Bay line.
The Black Bay 54 here is a more recent addition to the collection, and is directly inspired by the first Tudor Submariner released in 1954 under the reference 7922. The BB54 features the same 37mm case size as the 7922 — a point that drew plenty of praise during the model’s debut at Watches and Wonders in 2023. Additionally, the watch measures just 11.2mm thick and features 200m of water resistance, ensuring that it’s just as capable of a dive watch as it is a comfortable daily wearer. Without a doubt, this is our favorite modern dive watch and would make a fantastic addition to any enthusiast’s collection.
